On San Pedro, we stayed at El Pescador.  The rooms were big and the food was good (all of the seafood, everywhere on San Pedro, was incredibly fresh.  It was awesome), but I wouldn’t recommend it at all.  The fishermen seemed to enjoy themselves and if our purpose was fishing, I’ll bet we would have been happier.  But we were trying our hardest to do other things on the island (mostly snorkeling/diving) and the only woman who was available to help us was rude, snarky and very much not helpful at all.  With more help we would have had a much better experience (and better-organized snorkeling trips), and my friend would not have had to repeat the same two snorkeling spots in two days, on an island surrounded by a coral reef, because the divemaster’s assistant was drunk and the hotel would only work with one dive shop.  Everything we asked her seemed like an imposition.  It’s amazing how one person can singlehandedly make a vacation less pleasant.  Also, our room smelled like sewage and their solution was… to open the windows.

Trip to Caye Caulker.  Wandered up and down the one road in town for an hour, managed to make a homemade ice cream cone last half that time.  Successful trip, nice afternoon.

Lionfish are a scourge in the Caribbean (a Pacific fish, they have no natural predator in the Atlantic and are throwing the ecosystem out of balance).  I am all for getting them on more menus so the demand for their meat grows, people are incentivized to get them out of the ocean, and everyone wins (or at least, the environment loses slightly less than it already has)

After two days of torrential rain, I finally got the chance to go diving at the hol chan marine reserve.  It’s a calm, easy, shallow dive, which was exactly what I needed for my first time diving after being certified.  And there was lots to see!

Travel is so rewarding that it should take precedence over other things younger people spend money on.
